Welcome to Cutie Patootie ShihTzu!
I am proud to be a Quality reputable breeder of the AKC Imperial sized ShihTzu in the 4 to 8 lb range and have bred all sizes of AKC ShihTzu for over 40 years.. I fell in love with this breed back in the 1970's, and knew they were my life's passion. As a Lifetime lover of animals I found that I could not function well without these wonderful babies being in my life.. after being owned and loved by them for several years, I chose to get from all over the county the BEST OF THE BEST to breed, ensuring that I would breed only a select number of furbabies for families that would love these precious puppies for their lifetimes. I chose to keep just a few adults, to ensure that my breeding program was producing quality babies with only a couple of litters a year.
I started breeding the small standard size first, then as time and ability allowed, I moved into the Imperial sized ShihTzu and Chinese Imperial Dogs.... I am very selective about who ends up with my babies.. My goal has always been to NEVER HAVE EVEN ONE OF MY BABIES IN A SHELTER ... PERIOD.. that is my promise to every mom and puppy I breed.. and I will continue that promise for the life of these wonderful babies...I love them too much to allow the possibility of them ever being abandoned or abused.. and the homes they go to will love them this passionately too..
For over 40 years now, My Mission includes being passionate about providing YOU with a stunning AKC Imperial sized Shih tzu with a smooshy face, short cobby body, perfect features and the most awesome personality all wrapped up in a tiny package!...They are my PASSION, not my business! I strive to produce quality babies who meet or exceed the standards set for the ShihTzu except for in a smaller, more compact size.. whether you call them "pocket puppy" Imperial" "Chinese Lion Dog" or furbaby... I GUARANTEE THEY WILL COME TO YOU WELL SOCIALIZED, PRE-SPOILED, AND PERFECTLY ADORABLE!!!
We offer AKC Limited registration upon proof of spay/neuter, and AKC Full Registration to approved In Home Breeder programs...

Dear past and future puppy owners,
I loved them first.
I thought of you years before you even realized. I planned for and cared about your baby long before you started thinking of adding to your family. I worried about your future with that puppy before you knew there would be one.
There were hours upon hours spent researching lines for the parents of your puppies. Going over breeder after breeder, choosing not only my pet but looking for a dog that will make you your pet. Worrying if you'd be happy, if I had chosen correctly and your puppy would grow up healthy and happy. Going over puppy after puppy with fellow breeders, running over my program with as many knowledgeable breeders as I could, determined to not miss anything. Tracing lines back as far as I could, learning the ins and outs not only for my knowledge but so that I was informed, prepared to go over every detail with you, to answer the questions that sometimes you don't even ask.
Then there's years of watching your puppies parents grow. Loving them and enjoying them as part of my family. Taking them every where I can, training them, socializing them, watching how they fill out. Asking myself I had made the right choice in both of them. Scrutinizing their confirmation, how they move, and their temperament. There was the stress of health testing. Praying not only that my babies were healthy but that they had the genes to make your baby healthy.
Finally came the time to put your puppies parents together. For the next 63 days I worried, I obsessed, I grew excited. I watched your puppies mom like a hawk. Making sure my baby was okay, monitoring her diet better than I do my own. Concerned that she was getting enough of the right nutrients and that your growing baby was getting the best start possible. I spent hours on the couch, floor, and dog bed with her watching her tummy grow and anxiously waiting. As your baby and mine grew I laid my hands on her tummy and felt the first movements of your puppy. As the time grew near, I spent most nights in the nursery with her, or her in my room, Making sure she didn't go into labor without me knowing, in case something went wrong and one of our babies needed help. When labor started my whole life stopped. I spent every second with her. Your baby was born into my hands and I held my breath as I cleaned them up, watching for movement and breathing, checking them over, and wondering if you'd love them as much as I already did. I helped your babies brother when mom got tired and he was stuck. I cried when your babies sister didn't make it.
For the first 10 weeks most of my life was filled with your baby. Watching them grow and making sure I was doing everything possible to ensure they started their lives the right way. Making sure each one was getting enough to eat, enough socialization time, that they were dewormed and given their shots. I was the first person they saw when they opened their eyes. I spent my weeks playing with them and keeping them safe.
I searched for you and interviewed you. As you spoke I tried to read your character. Would you love them as much as I do? Would you bring them in as part of your family? Would you care for this tiny life that I brought into this world that I am responsible for? Some of you were turned away but some of you were welcomed into our family. The day you took your baby home was harder than I'd ever let on. I was excited for you but I was also terrified. Had I chosen wisely? Were you who you seemed to be?
My love and worry didn't end there. I thought about your baby regularly, saddened when I didn't get updates, ecstatic when I did. I hoped you were caring for your baby the way I care for mine. I answered your questions happily and answered them again just as happily to your babies siblings new parents. When your puppies sister ate a couch I stayed up that night she was at the vets, waiting to hear that she was okay. When their brothers parents decided he no longer fit in their life I welcomed him home, sorry that I had chosen wrong for him and promised him it wouldn't happen again.
I loved your baby first and I will never stop.

Even tho I did not author this passage, it says exactly what I feel each and every time I decide to breed one of my babies... thank you for taking the time to read it..
This next passage was written by a fellow breeder, Roberta Byrd from Paddi's ShihTzu Closet.. it explains just some of the work and cost that goes into why we ask so much for our puppies..
What goes into being a good breeder?
I know there is a big misconception out there among pet owners, so I would like to take a couple of minutes and hopefully shed some light on the matter of quality AKC puppies and what goes into them.
I am writing this first hand, but bare in mind, when I refer to myself, I am really speaking on behalf of all GOOD breeders everywhere.
I wake in the morning and my day begins with taking all of my fur babies out to potty. That doesn't mean opening the door for them to go out. This means dressing accordingly for the weather and taking myself out there with them. I scoop their poop as they go. You will never find a turd in my yard. NEVER!
If it is raining, I then proceed to dry them all off before they reenter the house from the porch. If there is fresh snow, then I have to comb all of the snowballs from their hair. This can take about an hour. Now multiply that by 5 times a day.
Now it's time for their breakfast. Cleaning puppy pens and nursery and making sure all have fresh food and water.
Laundry. Oh boy do we have laundry. Multiple loads a day and there are only 2 people in the house. Yes, potty pads, dog bedding, whelping mats, doggy panties, wraps & towels.
Grooming; oh my, do we ever have grooming. Every day there is combing, topknots to redo, baths, haircuts, nails to trim.
Puppies to photograph. This is usually a 2 day event. It is not as easy as one thinks. I probably take 50 - 100 shots of each pup in hopes of getting a few that are not blurry.
Attention and play time: They all require this.
A good breeder does not buy and breed $200 dogs. We pay in the thousands for a pup when we buy one and we choose wisely. If we don't and the pup grows up not to be breeding quality, then that is money lost and the dog is found a good pet home.
We not only have the cost of our dogs, but we also have a ton of expenses that the average pet owner probably doesn't think about when looking for a puppy.
1. Food
2. Treats
3. Monthly flea & heartworm preventatives.
4. Wormings
5. vet costs & medications
6. Supplements
7. Toys for adults & puppies
8. Crates & carriers
9 Exercise pens
10. Whelping boxes
11. Whelping mats
12. Potty pads
13. Towels
14. Grooming supplies
15. Whelping supplies
16. Vaccinations for adults
17. Vaccinations for puppies
18. Vet check ups for puppies
19. Water & electricity for all of the laundry & grooming
20. Heating bill on my nursery alone is running about $75 a month right now.
I didn't even touch on costs when something goes wrong and a c-section is needed or an adult or pup encounters a major medical expense. Nor did I mention the countless hours spent on marketing and dealing with people who only waste my time.
Then we have the cost of spays and neuters when we retire one of our dogs. I have a couple of males here who have been neutered for going on 2 years and I am still looking for the best homes possible. This is 2 years of expenses on them after they are no longer breeding. I do not mind and I am definitely not complaining. It is my choice and responsibility to keep them as long as it takes until I am confident I have found the right home.
Last, but certainly not least.
1. Registration fees of our dogs
2. Registration fees of our litters
3. DNA testing
4. Color testing
5. Any health testing one might do.
6. Replacement of furniture or anything else that may get chewed on.
7. Lots of extra expense and hours spent on cleaning and supplies.
Many people don't know that females usually wait until bedtime to go into labor. This means being up all night with no sleep, whelping puppies. God forbid we get one that isn't strong enough to nurse. This means round the clock feeding of that puppy or puppies, every 2 hours. This can mean days or weeks with very little sleep.
So if you wonder why we have to charge what we do or if you were under the misconception that all we do is sit around and let our dogs screw and rake in money, now you know. I can guarantee you that if I divided what I make by my hours put in, I am working for less than minimum wage and I love doing it. The unconditional love I receive on a daily basis is why I do what I do. That is my real paycheck. The happiness and love it brings to a lot of families in the form of a happy and healthy puppy is my bonus.
Rest assured that you will be getting one of the BEST.. you DO pay for what you get..

What a Shih Tzu is made of
A dash of lion, a bit of a beggar, a tablespoon of monkey, several teaspoons of rabbit, a smidgen of ballerina, a couple of ounces of domestic cat, one part baby seal and one part court jester, with a dash of teddy bear and last but not least a pinch of a wise old Chinese man. Wal-la you have a wonderful, charming, curious, brave, cunning, independent, wise Cutie Patootie Shih Tzu.

If you thought there was just something about the Shih-Tzu temperament that makes it a great furry friend to have around, you aren't wrong. Shih-Tzu have been bred for generations to be the ultimate companion dog. Here are some of the reasons why those magnetic personality traits make your Shih-Tzu simply irresistible.
Shih-Tzu are the most devoted little pet with a large dog personality. Above all, a Shih-Tzu is devoted, wholly and completely, to you and your needs. Sure, sometimes he likes to play with a toy or romp around the living room, but you can't ask for a better listener, lap warmer, or sympathetic furry ear.
Your Shih-Tzu can sit at your feet for hours gently snoozing, but he doesn't forget to occasionally gaze up at you in adoration. If you want a dog who does his own thing and only occasionally bothers to notice you, this breed may not be the one for you. But if you desire a pet who thinks it's all about you, then this is your dog.
Shih-Tzu are tranquil, You've heard of those yappy little ankle-biting lap dogs, right? Well, the Shih-Tzu isn't one of them. Calm and self-possessed, the Shih-Tzu watches and waits. Sure, he may bark at the delivery guy when he comes right up to the door, but he's not bred to be a watchdog. Your Shih-Tzu is too focused on you to worry about anybody else who may be walking by outside, and if somebody else comes in the house, your Shih-Tzu thinks it's obvious that this new friend has arrived for the sole purpose of petting and loving him. Sure, exceptions do exist, and you'll find some dogs who bark a lot, especially among dogs who were never properly socialized. Some people talk more than others, and some Shih-Tzu bark more than others. But in general, this dog isn't yappy or suspicious. Shih-Tzu have a sense of humor. Part of being a good buddy is having a sense of humor, and your funny little Shih-Tzu quickly discovers how to make you laugh. Whether he's flipping his stuffed mouse toy into the air and then spinning around to see where it landed, pretending to play fetch then darting just out of reach when you try to take back the ball, or gazing at you with an expression so serious and concerned that your bad mood dissolves completely, your Shih-Tzu brightens your day and puts a smile on your face. Who can resist that?
